Kinect BeatWheel

Kinect BeatWheel

Uses Kinect to control which beat is playing in a looping sample.

[edit]About the hack

A sample is chopped up into eighth note slices (or any increment) and arranged like a clock face around you. The currently playing slice is controlled by your left hand's position in space. This allows you to remix a loop by waving your hand around. The red dot indicates your hand's position, the green bar indicates the currently playing slice, and the blue bar moves at the tempo of the song to serve as a guide.

Surf gear company Rip Curl recently teamed up with Time-Slice Films to make a video showing surfers in “bullet time“. Rather than use a giant DSLR rig, they decided to make a portable rig composed of 30 GoPro cameras.

Here’s the behind the scenes video:

…and here’s the video that resulted:

Lumenoise is a light pen, which turns your old CRT-TV into an audiovisual synthesizer, made by Niklas Roy.

You paint abstract geometric patterns and sounds directly onto the screen. It is a playful and performative device, as anything that you do will cause an instantaneous reflection in the gadget’s sonic and visual output.

Just watch the video below, the grey square is the position of the light pen.

Niklas actually gave me an early version of the Lumenoise. The battery and the circuit were not yet inside the pen, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s  funny to play with. The simplicity of the this technology is really amazing.
